ArtScreen is a prestigious program supporting artists with disability or who are d/Deaf to develop their creativity and careers through producing new video artworks which are screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art in celebration of International Day of People with Disability.

Now in its fourth year, this exciting visual art project creates unique opportunities and aims to broaden engagement with, and appreciation of, the distinctive insights and skills of artists with disability. These unique and compelling works make an important contribution to the diversity of cultural expression in Sydney and previous ArtScreen work has gone on to be further developed and selected for the Cannes Short Film Festival: Independent Films.

Artists Sofya Gollan and Guy Morgan were selected for the 2023 ArtScreen program. They have been mentored by experienced video artists Dani Pearce and Dr Zanny Begg respectively.

About the Artists

Sofya Gollan

Writer and Director Sofya Gollan is an award-winning filmmaker and a graduate from both NIDA and AFTRS. Her career spans a number of disciplines, as an actor she is best known for being on Play School for over 30 years, normalising Disability onscreen well before it was recognised as essential representation. She is also a playwright and has been a Griffin Playwrights Studio Resident. As a filmmaker, she has been nominated for 4 AFI/ACCTA Awards (Best Screenplay and Best Director) for her films which have screened extensively here and internationally. As a writer, director, and developer her work is informed by the experience of the outsider, seeking to illuminate these characters in contemporary storytelling.

Guy Morgan

Guy Morgan’s art practice is eclectic, but he is best known for his work in portraiture. He was a finalist in the Archibald Prize (twice) and has also appeared in the Moran Prize and Salon des Refusés. He holds a Master of Studio Arts (Painting) from Sydney College of the Arts and served on the Academic Board. Between 2017-2020 he was a Board Member of Arts Access Australia. Currently Guy teaches painting as part of the Pine Street Creative Tutor Panel for City of Sydney.

The video’s success is its ability to connect with many types of audiences in a non-threatening, human way. It provides insights into disability arts; the ongoing inequality artists (and audiences) with a disability face, and encourages greater access, inclusion, understanding and coverage of the issues in social and mainstream media.
