New Western Sydney Residency Program Launched For Artists With Disability

Applications for the 2021 Accessible Arts and Sydney Olympic Park Artist-In-Residence Program are now open until 5pm on Friday 27 August 2021.

This valuable program will provide creative and career development opportunities for two artists with disability or who are d/Deaf from NSW and the ACT.

The program is offering two (2) places for a 4-week residency at the heritage-listed Newington Armory. The first residency will be available from 18 October – 14 November. The second residency will be available from 22 November – 19 December. Both residencies are for individual artists.

The Newington Armory is a beautiful heritage estate in Sydney Olympic Park. It’s a former naval armaments depot that has been adapted for re-use as an arts, education and heritage tourism venue. The Sydney Olympic Park Authority operates a residency program for artists who want to use the estate’s facilities and this is the first time that a program specifically for artists with disability is being offered. Since 2005, the Armory has hosted almost 300 artists from 19 countries working across many different disciplines. Artists can stay in on-site accommodation or can visit the site daily to use the facilities.

Successful applicants will be provided with self-catering accommodation (if required and suitable) and a small stipend ($150 per week) to assist with travel and the cost of materials. Applicants will be responsible for arranging their own transport to and from Newington Armory and any support services that may be required while they are on site.

Applications close 5pm on Friday 27 August

Accessible Arts Interim CEO Morwenna Collett: “Artists with disability don’t always get the same opportunities as artists without disability due to a range of physical, financial, and cultural barriers. This program is all about trying to level the playing field for professional artists with disability so they can take their creativity and their careers to the next level.

“The facilities at the Newington Armory provide a range of options for artists with disability to focus on creating art as well as developing their creative practice and we’re delighted to be working with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority to deliver this valuable opportunity for artists with disability to explore and develop their creative potential.”
