Live-Streaming Accessible Events | ATAG Online 22 July
As a result of the COVID crisis, many cultural events – such as arts and screen festivals – are now being delivered online. This creates a whole range of issues in terms of access and participation for audience members who live with disability.
PLATFORM Live was a fully accessible online multi-arts festival that was recently produced by Eastern Riverina Arts. The one-day event – which featured many of Australia’s leading artists and performers with disability – was supported by audio description, closed captions and Auslan interpretation. https://www.platformriverina.com/live
Join us for this FREE online panel discussion with members of the PLATFORM Live programming and technical teams as well as artists who performed at the festival as they discuss how they approached the complexities of streaming a fully accessible live online event using multiple content sources.
Learn about:
- How audience members with disability engage with online arts and cultural content

SPEAKERS
Daniel Savage – Visual Artist | PLATFORM Live Curator/Presenter
Daniel is a Canberra based artist working primarily in photography, video and performance. His practice is concerned broadly with perception – investigating the way our perceptions influence and affect our interactions with art, each other and the physical world. His work is often self-referential, exploring his individual experience of disability as a point of difference to engage audiences in exploring and reassessing established ideas and preconceptions that exist within society.
Hanna Cormick – Performance Artist | PLATFORM Live Curator/Presenter
Hanna is a performance artist and curator with a background in physical theatre, dance, circus and interdisciplinary art. She is a graduate of Ecole Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq (Paris) and Charles Sturt University’s Acting degree. Her recent work includes The Mermaid (Sydney Festival), Canary (Climate Change Theatre Action) and as co-curator of Eastern Riverina Arts’ online disability arts festival Platform LIVE. Her current practice is a reclamation of body through radical visibility.
Gayle Kennedy – Writer | PLATFORM Live Presenter
Gayle was Indigenous Editor/Writer, Streetwize Comics from 1995-1998. Her poetry collection Koori Girl Goes Shoppin was shortlisted for the David Unaipon Award and Gayle won the award in 2006 with Me, Antman & Fleabag. It was shortlisted for a Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, Deadly Award and commended for the Kate Challis RAKA Award. Gayle has published 11 novels with QUP (2011-2014) and has presented at writer’s festivals, NAIDOC events, and at various national and international forums on her experience with polio specifically and disability in general. Gayle has had work published in Puffin, Currency, Ora Nui, Edinburgh Review anthologies, Southerly Magazine, Verity La and many more.
Adam Bannister – Arts/Events Technician | PLATFORM Live Production Manager
Adam is a technical project manager and consultant for live and virtual events. He has spent the last 15 years delivering a broad range of events across corporate, community and government sectors. After moving from the UK to Wagga Wagga in 2015 he has set out to develop and grow the NSW regional events industry. He has worked closely with Eastern Riverina Arts on several key projects, most recently heading up the logistics and technical delivery of PLATFORM and PLATFORM Live.
Riana Head-Toussaint – Multidisciplinary Artist | PLATFORM Live Presenter (Moderator)
Riana Head-Toussaint is a multidisciplinary artist with disability, who uses a manual wheelchair for mobility. She works across choreography and performance, with the concept or investigation at the centre of each project influencing what form(s) will be used. Previous works have involved video (live and pre-recorded), movement, text and audience participation, in various combinations. Her most recent piece, Very Excellent Disabled Dancing, was commissioned as part of the 2020 Keir Choreographic Award. Thematically, her works often involve interrogating dominant systems, structures and ways of thinking; and advocating (whether explicitly or implicitly) for social change. As well as being an artist, Riana is a lawyer, access consultant and disability activist.
ABOUT PLATFORM LIVE
PLATFORM Live grew out of Eastern Riverina Arts’ PLATFORM Project, an innovative, purpose-built, portable and accessible ‘space’ adapted from a shipping container that travels around to community festivals and can be configured as a sensory space, chill out area, exhibition space or small stage.
Due to COVID restrictions, the PLATFORM project had to be repurposed and the PLATFORM Live online arts festival was the response developed and produced by Eastern Riverina Arts. https://www.platformriverina.com/live
