This second panel in the national series Cack Conversations produced by Alstonville Dance Studio in partnership with Accessible Arts NSW and Ausdance NSW. The panel will discuss the process of making the film Your Different/My Same featuring Adelaide-based disabled dance artists, Matt Shilcock and Josh Twee.

This panel also welcomes Director of Ausdance ACT Dr Cathy Adamek (formerly President of Ausdance SA) who will introduce the context of this collaboration, that is, a project called Dance.Focus which was designed for choreographers to challenge, resonate and engage with screen dance.

Your Different/My Same uses dance, text and physical theatre to explore the human condition. The work investigates philosophical and practical connotations of physical and internal capabilities and the blurred conceptual line between function and dysfunction. Discussing the collaboration with Matt, Josh reflects, “We share lived experience. I have had many insightful and inspiring conversations with Matt on the topic of accessibility, empowerment, awareness, and just getting things done in everyday life”.

Speakers

Matt Shilcock
Matt Shilcock is a South Australian based contemporary dance theatre artist. Diagnosed at birth with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, commonly known as ‘brittle bone disorder’, he spent much of his youth in a wheelchair before learning to walk at the age of fifteen. Matt is currently an associate artist with Australian Dance Theatre where he is continuing the development of his own choreographic methodology and movement language Alchemia Exteriores, exploring the development and application of choreographic scoring systems in the creation of original dance works.

Joshua Twee
Joshua Twee is a cross disciplinary performance artist whose ever-expanding practice has negotiated across dance, theatre, dance, film, puppetry, fencing, martial arts and stage combat. His works frequently incorporate and exhibit media from different disciplines culminating most recently in live/social/indigenous dance, acting and dance films. In 2019 Josh received a green room award (Experimental Theatre – alongside Carly Shepherd and Daniel Nixon) for “Crackers N Dip with Chase and Toey”. Joshua’s work predominantly explores social dance, connections with the nature of self and “it’s” relationships with the world.

Dr Cathy Adamek
Dr Adamek is the Director of Ausdance ACT, having moved recently to Canberra from Adelaide where she was President Ausdance SA. Dr Adamek is currently a board member of Ausdance National and a peer assessor for the Australia Council. Trained in classical ballet to Advanced RAD with Joanne Priest and Sheila Laing, Dr Adamek has worked as a performer, choreographer, director and producer creating and producing award-winning projects and tours funded by Arts SA, The Australia Council and private sponsorship over the last 30 years in Australia. Dr Adamek also works as a consultant, dramaturg and mentor across many media platforms, as a NWS 9 TV producer/choreographer and presenter and a choreographer for AACTA awarded feature films Cargo and The Nightingale.
