The South Coast Speaks Up
On Friday 16 May, Alison McLaren, Audience Development Officer for Accessible Arts facilitated the first regional ‘Speak Up’ consultation in Moruya.
Twenty participants from Batemans Bay, Bega, Bermagui, Central Tilba, Moruya and Narooma represented a broad cross-section of community members including individuals with various disabilities and representatives from arts and disability organisations.
Key issues discussed included:
- A lack of transport to and from arts opportunities
- Geographic isolation emphasised by lack of resources in the region
- The need for localised or mobile arts and disability programs
- Arts mentor programs for emerging artists with a disability
- Local registered training organizations to deliver accredited arts training
Overall, strong community members in the South Coast region are
committed to improving arts and disability opportunities at a local
level. The consultation enabled an important networking opportunity for
individuals and organizations to come together and work towards
combining efforts to achieve common goals. Accessible Arts was thrilled
with the vision and ideas that were delivered by the community and is
confident that there is significant momentum for implementation of
solutions raised. Results will be incorporated into the Arts and
Disability Action Strategy. The full transcript of this consultation
will be available online soon.
