Arts Activated Conference - Two Packed Days Of Arts Professionals & Interactive Workshops
The upcoming Arts Activated Conference is packed to the brim with interactive workshops, live performances and international keynote speakers. With insights into groundbreaking programs such as Club Wild, as featured at the Sydney Opera House, and Unlock Your Creativity, contemporary dance for people with disabilities, to the inspiring performance by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf, and international guest STAGETEXT who initiated captioning in theatres across the UK – there really is something for everyone.
WEDNESDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER
The conference will be officially opened at 9am by the Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability Services, the Hon Kristina Keneally MP. Other highlights on the day are Graeme Innes from the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission who will discuss Accessing the Arts – being discriminating rather than discriminatory. Singer and Actor Tim McCallum will tell his inspiring story followed by a beautiful live performance, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra will present their access initiatives. A session not to be missed is artist Claire Hogan who will explain how someone with only 5% sight produces paintings. Throughout the day, an entertaining series of original animations by people with disabilities will be screened and not to be missed!
THURSDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER
On Thursday the program will offer a performance from the renowned Tutti Ensemble from South Australia, followed by an invigorating dance/performance workshop from the Spastic Centre NSW’s Unlock Your Creativity program. The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Sydney Opera House and NIDA will all present their high quality arts initiatives for people with disabilities. And from Victoria, Arts Access Victoria and The City of Port Phillip will discuss the creation of a mixed media installation, as well as the role of partnerships in building strong sustainable inclusive arts projects. Matthew Perry from remote NSW will explain how he has overcome limited resources and isolation to produce an inspiring and sustainable arts program, Art in Garage, within two shires.
The official closing of the Arts Activated Conference will include a highly energetic performance by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf (ATOD). “Futures” is a thought-provoking show that challenges perceptions of theatre by people who are deaf. It illustrates the stories of three students whose lives take different paths, interrupted by romance, destiny and dilemmas.
