Speak Up on the South Coast Reminder

Accessible Arts is going on the road to catch up with regional communities and is holding its first consultation in Moruya on Friday 16 May from 11am to 3pm, with lunch included. Individuals and organisations from the surrounding communities including Batemans Bay and Bega are invited to share ideas that express the unique needs of their communities. This pilot consultation will act as a model for further meetings planned throughout regional NSW, dependant on Accessible Arts securing funding for the initiative. This will enable the voices from both regional arts and disability sectors to be heard by policy and decision makers based in metropolitan areas of NSW. To RSVP for the Moruya consultation or for further information contact Alision McLaren, Audience Development Officer on 02 9251 6499 (ext 6), fax 02 9251 6422, email amclaren@aarts.net.au. Artist Profile: David Doyle - Apprenticeship Training Program participant

David Doyle is one of the participants of Accessible Arts - Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP). He says "Being involved in the Apprenticeship Training Program has helped me realize I belong on the stage, in front of the camera, behind the microphone and behind the scenes as well." David's lifestyle is proof of this. When he is not training or instructing martial arts, you may hear him on community radio station BLUFM 89.1 as a presenter. He has also been involved in several theatre productions in the Blue Mountains where he is able to use his voice training skills, learnt when studying a course at NIDA. He was the MC for the My Space, My Place exhibition at Powerhouse Youth Theatre last October and was an interviewer for Accessible Arts' AART.BOXX exhibition at Sydney Opera House for International Day for People with a Disability in 2007. David will graduate with a Certificate II in Live Production, Theatre and Events this July. His developing skills base in the arts will reward any employer.

Companion Card announced for NSW

The Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, Kristina Keneally has announced the introduction of a Companion Card for carers of people with severe or profound disabilities. The Companion Card acknowledges that a carer is indispensable to a person with a profound disability, giving them equal access to services and facilities. Carers will receive free public transport and entry to some government facilities as part of a new initiative. "In addition to public buses and trains, we believe there will be strong support for the card from the private sector, particularly entertainment and sporting businesses," Keneally stated. The card will be free, it won’t be means tested and will make it easier for about 25,000 people in NSW to better access community events. It will be available later this year.
